DWI Hit-Run Driver Nabbed After Crash In Stamford

A Stamford man was nabbed for DWI following a hit-and-run crash after the person he struck followed him while he called the police for help.

The incident took place on Friday, March 1, when the Stamford Police Department received a call from a motorist who said that his vehicle was hit and they were following the vehicle around the East Side of Stamford because the operator left the accident scene, the Stamford Police Said.

Officers Aaron Miller and Vanessa Lynn quickly located the victim who was able to them a description of the fleeing vehicle.

Within minutes of giving out the description, Officer Dan Kokorros spotted the vehicle on Cove Road and pulled it over with the assistance of Officer Nicole Petrenko. They identified the driver as 46-year-old Osmin Velasquez-Maldonado and he appeared to be intoxicated, police said.

Officers were able to quickly determined that Velasquez-Maldonado had a suspended operator’s license and had two warrants for his arrest for other motor vehicle violations. 

Also, in plain view inside the vehicle was an empty bottle of “Fireball” whiskey and Velasquez-Maldonado reeked of alcohol, Stamford Police said.

 He was removed from the vehicle and failed all three roadside sobriety tests. He was brought to police where he blew a .230 and a.236 during a  breathalyzer test. 

Officers said Velasquez-Maldonado admitted to drinking two bottles of whiskey while driving the vehicle on his way to pick up a 14-year-old relative. 

Velasquez-Maldonado was charged with OUI, drinking while driving, evading responsibility, operating under suspension, and unsafe passing. 

He was being held on a $25,000 bond, in addition to a $12,500 bond for the two warrants.
